Around 80–90% of people worldwide carry at least one strain of human papillomavirus (HPV) or herpes virus (HSV), usually without symptoms. Warts or blisters tend to appear or flare only when immune surveillance is weakened – for example during periods of stress, illness, fatigue, or being run down – and for the person experiencing them, they can be very distressing.
As these are lifelong infections once acquired, the goal is not to eradicate the virus, but to strengthen and support the immune system so it can keep the virus contained and reduce the likelihood of flare-ups. One of the most common triggers for reactivation is ongoing stress, which stimulates the adrenal glands to secrete higher than normal levels of cortisol – and this has a negative impact on the immune response.
Fortunately, there are effective herbs, essential oils, and nutritional supports that can robustly help the body respond. Just as importantly, a flare can be viewed as a flag that the body is under strain – inviting us to assess our life pressures, whilst paying attention to strengthening our immune response.
